Among all the pipe shapes that exist, the so-called Cutty silhouette is most certainly one of the most ancient that is. Indeed, it was already popular in the XVIII century (before briar pipes started to appear) with the first clay pipes. Visually, the Cutty shape is characterized by a rounded bowl, slightly inclined forward, and above all a small bead located under the bowl. At the time, clay pipes used to overheat a lot. Because of that, the outgrowth located under the bowl allowed smokers to put away their pipe while they cooled down (before reusing them a while after). The Cutty pipe (also known as the Belgian pipe) is usually associated with the traditional Gambier pipes silhouette. Nowadays, the Cutty shape is still topical but the manufacturers and craftspeople reinterpret it with different variations (sometimes even without the iconic bead). On our online shop, you will find Cutty pipes coming from Bruno Nuttens (France), Tom Eltang's (Denmark), but also from Ser Jacopo's (Italy) workshops.
