The deck chair seems to be a nice place to smoke while looking at the clouds in the sky. But, shortly after you went out, you feel that the wind is coming. Are there any precautions to take or tips to know when smoking the pipe outside?
A special pipe to smoke outside:
To smoke when it is windy, pipe makers designed a pipe with a special silhouette. The bowl of this pipe is slightly higher on its front face. This part acts as a protection screen against the wind. Thanks to this shape, the pipe can be used more easily without fearing that the wind will accelerate the combustion of the tobacco, or that the latter is blown out of the tobacco chamber. And unfortunately, when a few ashes eventually make it out and end up on your clothes, you will be left with a lot of small holes in your clothes. Thanks to the bowl of this pipe, slightly higher on one side, there is less chance that this could happen.
Please note that it is advised not to smoke a new pipe outside when it is windy. Indeed, your pipe is still in the middle of the break in process, and a layer of carbon is slowly building up on the walls of the tobacco chamber. When breaking in your pipe, you have to take your time and smoke slowly. The wind will accelerate the combustion of the tobacco, and your pipe will overheat. If this happens, you will damage the briar. We therefore strongly recommend to smoke a new pipe inside your house.

Another benefit of this pipe is the way the tobacco will burn. As you will have understood, the wind accelerates the combustion of the tobacco. You may also damage your pipe without even seeing it (it is even truer if the walls of the tobacco chamber are thin). This pipe is therefore very convenient if you want to smoke outside.
You have to know that some finishes are also better for heat dissipation. Briar pipes with a sandblasted or rusticated finish will indeed allow your pipe not to overheat as quickly as a pipe with a smooth finish would do. Moreover, thanks to their finish, you might not notice the few scratches on the briar. Very convenient when smoking outside.

A very convenient small accessory:
This small accessory you might not know is very convenient: a pipe wind cap! Be careful though, this small accessory is not designed to be used when taking a shower... It can be put at the top of the bowl and allows you to smoke your pipe when it is a little bit windy or when you are walking. Whether you are on your boat or hiking in the mountains, this cap is very useful. But what are its benefits?
- It prevents tobacco from burning too quickly. Indeed, there will not be as much air in the tobacco chamber as there would be when smoking outside without this cap. The tobacco will therefore burn slower.
- It prevents ashes from going out of the bowl because of the wind. If a burning tobacco strand ends up on your t-shirt, you will have a small hole, which you do not want.
- It fits in almost every pipe, which is very convenient. It is designed to be equipped on pipes that have an internal diameter of the bowl between 1,6cm (minimum) and 2cm (maximum).
If you live somewhere where it is very windy, you will love to have this smoking accessory to easily smoke outside.
You have to know that there are pipes that are already equipped with a cap. Most of the time, they have a hinge system to open the cap.
