Breaking-in a new pipe, an essential step:

Welcome everyone. What if I talk to you about the break-in process? You do not see? Well, it is actually quite a crucial step!

Let's start with the beginning, and let's define what the break-in process of a pipe is. It is the creation of a carbon layer on the walls of the tobacco chamber, in the bowl. Look at the difference between a new pipe and a smoked one.

What is it for? This carbon layer will protect the briar from heat, and it is therefore necessary for the longevity of your pipe.

A good cake is not done immediately. It will be made little by little. The goal is to progressively create a crust, starting at the bottom of the bowl. For this, put a little bit of tobacco at the bottom of the bowl, filling a third of the latter for the first few uses. Repeat the operation with more and more tobacco, until the top has been reached.

A good cake (the layer of carbon) should be about 2mm thick.

Now, it is important to avoid some practices. First one: do not realize the break-in process by burning alcohol in the bowl. You will damage your pipe and get an unpleasant taste when smoking. Do not smoke too quickly when nervous or when it is windy. Indeed, your pipe might overheat, or even burn! Do not scrape the carbon layer on the walls of the tobacco chamber. It is beginning to form, and it protects the wood.

Finally, you should know that pre-carbonized pipes exist. This means that there already is a thin layer of carbon inside the bowl. You will however still have to follow the steps of the break-in process.
